Let’s ride fat bikes!!
Friday, November 28
Gather before 9:00 a.m. at the Plainfield Park and Ride. Wheels roll as close to 9:00 as possible.
If the lot is empty at 9:00 you can probably hustle and catch up to us, we won’t be rolling fast.
We will ride the rail bed out to the ponds at Edgewater (Marshfield) and then head back. It might be a wet ride, it might be a snowy ride, it might be an icy ride. It will certainly be an adventure. The map is below.
The rail bed is tame with only a few muddy spots, but this ride can be challenging in Winter. Riders should have a solid understanding of Winter wilderness preparedness and safety.
Some required things:
- A helmet.
- A fat bike with at least 4 inch wide tires. Studded tires are a good idea, but are not required.
- Hydration back pack, hip pack, or water bottle and cage. Some way to safely and securely carry water with you and hopefully in a way that it won’t freeze.
- A helmet that fits over something that will keep your head/ears warm.
- Equipment to fix a bicycle flat. This usually includes tire levers, a tube, some kind of travel inflation device (we like mini-pumps/frame pumps), and any tools needed to remove your wheel.
- Extremely warm gloves. Some hand and foot warmers are also a decent idea.
- Clothing that is comfortable and warm, yet not too baggy. We like many light layers instead of one big bulky layer. Sporting goods “tech-tee” shirts are a primitive version of bicycle jerseys that work great for first time riders. Wool long johns are a great second layer. Followed by a good insulating layer with a little room, then last a good wind blocking layer.
- Did anyone mention a helmet yet? Bring a helmet, helmets are required.
- A patient presence. All experience levels will be on this ride; a slow pace, regrouping often, re-riding fun or interesting sections of trail, and generally encouraging everyone is a part of this experience.
- A helmet.
If you have not yet done so for 2025, filling out our rider waiver form ahead of time is required as well. You can do it all online: Click here.
**As with all fat bike rides, conditions of the trail may mean that we need to change locations, or cancel entirely. We will send an email update when that happens, so make sure you are subscribed to this page or that you are paying attention to the Vermont Bicycle Shop social media.**
